What personal umbrella insurance covers

A personal umbrella adds $1 million or more of liability protection above your home, auto and watercraft policies. A serious car accident, a dog bite or an injury at your home can lead to a lawsuit far larger than your underlying limits, putting savings, home equity and future wages at risk. Umbrella coverage is one of the most affordable ways to protect what you have built.

Good to know: your home and auto policies pay first, and the umbrella pays once their limits are used up. Carriers require minimum underlying limits, typically $250,000/$500,000 on auto and $300,000 on home.

Not covered: damage to your own property, intentional acts, business pursuits and professional liability.

Umbrella explained

How a personal umbrella works

An umbrella sits on top of your other policies and covers the same household, cars, homes and boats, with much higher limits.

Auto accidents

Serious injuries you or a household driver cause, often the largest personal claims.

Injuries at home

Dog bites, pool accidents and guest injuries.

Personal injury

Libel, slander and defamation, including online posts.

Legal defense

Attorney fees, often paid in addition to your limit.

How much do you need? A common starting point is enough to cover your net worth plus future earnings. Many families choose $1 to $2 million; higher-net-worth households often carry $5 million or more.

Who needs it

You may need an umbrella if you

Higher-risk situations

  • Have a teen or young driver in the household
  • Own a pool, trampoline or dog
  • Own rental property
  • Host gatherings or serve alcohol at home
  • Own a boat or recreational vehicles
  • Coach youth sports or serve on a nonprofit board

Assets worth protecting

  • Home equity
  • Savings and investments
  • Future wages and income
  • Business ownership interests
  • Inheritance and education funds

Keep underlying limits in place. If your auto or home limits drop below the umbrella's requirement, you may pay the gap yourself. We match all policies at renewal.
