What Boat & Yacht coverage includes

Boat insurance protects your vessel, its equipment and your liability on the water. Homeowners policies offer little or no coverage for boats, especially larger or faster ones. We compare marine carriers for everything from fishing boats and pontoons to sailboats and yachts, with agreed value options, navigation areas that match where you cruise, and the liability limits marinas require.

Good to know: agreed value policies pay the full insured amount on a total loss.

Not covered: wear, osmosis and charter use unless endorsed.

Boat insurance explained

How boat insurance works

Boat policies cover the vessel itself and your responsibility to others.

Hull and machinery

Damage to the boat, engine and permanently attached equipment.

Boat liability

Injuries and property damage to others while operating your boat.

On-water towing

Towing and assistance if you break down or run aground.

Uninsured boater

Injuries caused by a boater with no insurance.

Medical payments

Medical bills for you and your passengers.

Trailer and gear

Your trailer, fishing gear and personal effects.

Agreed value vs. actual cash value: agreed value pays the amount you set at the start of the policy for a total loss. Actual cash value deducts depreciation. Agreed value usually costs more but avoids surprises.

Discounts to ask about

  • Boating safety course completion
  • Bundling with home or auto
  • Safety equipment such as GPS and fire suppression

Coastal boats need a hurricane plan. Carriers often require a named-storm plan and may reduce coverage or apply a higher deductible for named storms. Ask us about haul-out reimbursement.
