What Private Passenger Auto coverage includes
Your auto policy protects you, your passengers and your car every time you drive. Each state sets its own minimum liability limits, but minimums rarely cover a serious accident, so we help you choose limits that protect your savings and your home. We shop 50+ carriers to match coverage to your drivers, vehicles and how you use them.
- Liability - Injuries and property damage you cause to others in an accident.
- Collision - Damage to your vehicle from an accident, regardless of fault.
- Comprehensive - Theft, vandalism, fire, hail, flood and animal strikes.
- Uninsured motorist - Your injuries when the at-fault driver has little or no insurance.
- Rental and towing - A rental car and roadside help while your car is repaired.
- Medical payments / PIP - Medical bills for you and your passengers; PIP is required in no-fault states.
- Rental reimbursement - A rental car while yours is repaired after a covered claim.
- Roadside assistance - Towing, jump-starts, flat tires and lockouts.
- Gap / loan-lease payoff - What you still owe if a financed or leased car is totaled.
Good to know: bundling auto with home or renters coverage and keeping a clean record usually lower your premium.
Not covered: mechanical breakdown, normal wear and tear, and business, rideshare or delivery use unless added. See the auto options below.

Personal auto explained
How personal auto insurance works
Whether you are insuring one commuter car or a household with teen drivers, a classic in the garage and a rideshare side gig, the right policy depends on who drives, what you drive and how you use it. Here is what a personal auto policy covers, what drives your rate and which supplements apply to your situation.
Liability
Pays for injuries and property damage you cause to others. Required in nearly every state.
Collision
Repairs your vehicle after an accident with another car or object, regardless of fault.
Comprehensive
Theft, vandalism, fire, hail, flood, falling objects, glass and animal strikes.
Uninsured / underinsured motorist
Protects you and your passengers when the at-fault driver has no insurance or not enough.
Medical payments / PIP
Medical bills for you and your passengers. PIP is required in no-fault states such as Florida, New Jersey and New York.
Rental reimbursement
A rental car while yours is being repaired after a covered claim.
Roadside assistance
Towing, jump-starts, flat tires, lockouts and fuel delivery.
Gap / loan-lease payoff
Covers what you still owe if a financed or leased car is totaled.
Reading liability limits: limits are written as three numbers, such as 100/300/100. That means up to $100,000 for each injured person, $300,000 for all injuries in one accident and $100,000 for property damage. Many state minimums are far lower, so we usually recommend higher limits, and a personal umbrella if you own a home or have savings to protect.
