What is a COI

What a certificate of insurance is

A certificate of insurance (COI) is a one-page document that proves your business carries insurance. It summarizes your coverage, including the insurance companies, policy numbers, effective and expiration dates, and the limits for coverages such as general liability, auto, workers compensation and umbrella. Most certificates are issued on the standard ACORD 25 form for liability coverage, with ACORD 24, 27 or 28 used for property.

Customers, landlords, general contractors, lenders and event venues often ask for a certificate before you start a job, sign a lease or close a contract. A certificate is evidence of coverage only. It does not change your policy, so special requirements such as additional insured status or a waiver of subrogation must be added to the policy by endorsement before they can be shown on the certificate.

How to request a certificate

Requesting a COI is simple

1. Identify the certificate holder

Send the full legal name and mailing address of the person or company that needs the certificate.

2. Share any requirements

Include the contract or job description and any requested wording, such as additional insured, waiver of subrogation or primary and non-contributory.

3. Send your request

Email info@societiesinsurance.com or call us with your name or business name, your policy number and the details above.

4. Receive your certificate

We review the request against your policy and email the certificate to you or directly to the holder, typically within 24-48 hours.
