What Inland Marine coverage includes

Inland marine insurance covers business property that moves or is located away from your main location: tools and equipment at job sites, goods in transit, materials waiting to be installed, and customer property in your care. Standard commercial property policies limit or exclude property away from your premises, so inland marine fills that gap.

Good to know: scheduling items over $10,000 by serial number and blanketing smaller tools usually gives the best rate and the cleanest claims.

Not covered: wear and tear, mechanical breakdown unless endorsed, theft from unlocked vehicles, and mysterious disappearance on many forms.

Inland marine explained

How inland marine insurance works

Inland marine policies are flexible and written for specific types of property, often called floaters because coverage follows the property.

Contractors equipment

Heavy equipment, tools and machinery at job sites.

Goods in transit

Your property while shipped or carried in your vehicles.

Installation floater

Materials and equipment until they are installed and accepted.

Property of others

Customer property in your care, custody or control.

Electronic equipment

Laptops, tablets and electronics used anywhere.

Exhibitions and samples

Property at trade shows, fairs and sales calls.

Scheduled vs. blanket: scheduled coverage lists each item and its value, which suits expensive equipment. Blanket coverage insures a category of smaller items up to a total limit, with a per-item cap.

What affects your inland marine rate

Rating factors

  • Type and value of equipment or property
  • Where it is used and stored overnight
  • Theft protection such as GPS tracking and locked storage
  • Whether equipment is rented to others
  • Loss history
  • Deductible

Ways to lower your premium

  • Keep an equipment list with serial numbers and photos
  • Store equipment in locked, secured areas
  • Install GPS trackers on high-value items
  • Remove keys and lock tools in vehicles
  • Choose a higher deductible on smaller tools

Renting equipment? Rental agreements often make you responsible for damage. Add rented-in equipment coverage so you are not paying out of pocket.
