What Trucking Liability coverage includes
For-hire motor carriers need primary auto liability that meets FMCSA and state minimums and satisfies brokers and shippers, plus coverage for cargo, your equipment and your drivers. We work with trucking specialty markets for fleets, new authorities and owner-operators, and handle the federal and state filings you need to keep your authority active.
- Primary auto liability - Injury and damage to others from your trucks.
- Federal and state filings - MCS-90, BMC-91X and state filings for your authority.
- Legal defense - Attorney costs for covered accident claims.
- Uninsured motorist - Injuries to your driver caused by an uninsured driver.
- General liability - Premises and non-auto claims at your yard or dock.
- Motor truck cargo - Freight you haul for others, often required by brokers.
- Physical damage - Collision and comprehensive on your tractors and trailers.
- Trailer interchange - Damage to non-owned trailers you pull under an interchange agreement.
Good to know: new authorities under two years pay much more, so clean CSA scores, ELDs, dash cams and written driver hiring standards matter. Most brokers require at least $1,000,000 in auto liability and $100,000 in cargo.
Not covered: injury to your own employees, cargo, damage to your own trucks, and pollution beyond the MCS-90 minimum on most policies. Each can be added with the coverage below.

Trucking insurance explained
How commercial trucking insurance works
A complete trucking program combines several policies. What you need depends on whether you run under your own authority, lease onto a motor carrier, or operate a fleet.
Primary auto liability
Injury and property damage to others caused by your trucks. Required for your operating authority.
Motor truck cargo
Loss or damage to the freight you haul, including refrigeration breakdown when added.
Physical damage
Repairs or replacement for your own tractors and trailers after collision, fire or theft.
Non-trucking liability (bobtail)
Liability for leased owner-operators when driving off dispatch.
Occupational accident
Medical and disability benefits for independent contractor drivers.
Excess liability
Higher limits above your primary liability for larger contracts.
Filings we handle: MCS-90 for federal financial responsibility, BMC-91 or BMC-91X liability filings, BMC-34 cargo filings where required, and state filings. Coverage lapses can trigger an authority revocation, so we monitor renewals and payments with you.
