What Individual & Family Health / ACA coverage includes
If you do not get health insurance through an employer, you can buy an individual or family plan through the ACA Marketplace or directly from a carrier. Marketplace plans cannot deny coverage or charge more for pre-existing conditions, and many households qualify for premium tax credits that lower the monthly cost. We help you compare plans, check networks and complete enrollment.
- Essential health benefits - Doctor visits, hospital care, emergency services, maternity, mental health and prescriptions.
- Pre-existing conditions - Covered on ACA plans from day one, with no medical underwriting.
- Premium tax credits - Income-based subsidies that can lower your monthly premium.
- Preventive care - Many screenings and vaccines at no cost when you use in-network providers.
- Out-of-pocket maximum - An annual cap on what you pay for covered in-network care.
Good to know: Open Enrollment for Marketplace plans generally runs from November 1 to January 15 in most states. Outside that window, you need a qualifying life event such as losing other coverage, moving, marriage or a new baby.
Not covered: out-of-network care on HMO and EPO plans except emergencies, and most adult dental and vision, which can be added separately.

Health insurance explained
How individual health insurance works
ACA plans are grouped into metal tiers. The tier tells you how you and the plan share costs, not the quality of care.
Bronze
Lowest monthly premium and highest costs when you need care. Fits people who rarely see a doctor.
Silver
Moderate premiums and costs. If your income qualifies, Silver plans include extra cost-sharing reductions.
Gold
Higher premium with lower deductibles and copays. Fits people who use care regularly.
Platinum
Highest premium and lowest out-of-pocket costs, where available.
Look beyond the premium. Compare the deductible, copays, out-of-pocket maximum, provider network and drug list. A plan with a low premium can cost more over a year if your doctors are out of network or your prescriptions are on a high tier.
Enrollment
When and how to enroll
Enrollment windows
- Open Enrollment: generally November 1 to January 15 in most states
- Special Enrollment: usually 60 days after a qualifying life event
- Qualifying events include losing employer coverage, moving, marriage, divorce, birth or adoption
- Medicaid and CHIP enrollment is open all year
Understanding your costs
- Premium: what you pay each month
- Deductible: what you pay before the plan starts sharing costs
- Copays and coinsurance: your share of each visit or service
- Out-of-pocket maximum: the most you pay in a year for covered in-network care
Estimate your income carefully. Premium tax credits are based on your expected household income for the year. If your income changes, update your Marketplace application so your credit stays accurate and you avoid owing money back at tax time.
