Clergy and pastoral professional liability protects churches, ministries and individual ministers – including chaplains, evangelists and traveling preachers – when someone claims that counseling, spiritual guidance or ministry services caused them harm.

Pastoral counseling liability - Claims that counseling or spiritual advice caused emotional, financial or physical harm.

Good to know: clergy professional liability is separate from general liability, which excludes professional services – and a host church's policy usually does not cover a visiting preacher. Ordained or licensed clergy, a written referral policy, background checks, an abuse prevention program and counseling held where others are present open the most markets.

Not covered: counseling by unlicensed staff acting as therapists, intentional or criminal acts, and sexual misconduct or abuse unless that coverage is specifically added.
