What Jewelry Floater coverage includes

A jewelry floater, also called a scheduled personal property endorsement or valuables policy, insures each piece of jewelry for its appraised value. Standard homeowners and renters policies cap theft of jewelry at a small amount and do not cover a lost stone or a ring dropped down the drain. A floater covers those situations, usually with no deductible, anywhere in the world.

Good to know: homeowners policies limit theft of these items to a small amount, often $1,500 to $2,500, unless they are scheduled.

Not covered: wear and tear and gradual damage.

Valuables explained

How valuables coverage works

Scheduled coverage lists each item and its value, so claims are paid based on that amount rather than the low limits in a homeowners policy.

All-risk coverage

Loss, theft and accidental damage, not just named perils.

Mysterious disappearance

Coverage when an item is simply lost, or a stone falls out of its setting.

Worldwide

Coverage at home, while traveling and in a safe deposit box.

Repair or replace

Settlement through a jeweler you choose, or cash, depending on the policy.

Keep appraisals current. Precious metal and gem prices change. Update appraisals every three to five years so your scheduled value keeps pace with replacement cost.

Collections

What you can insure

Common scheduled items

  • Engagement rings and wedding bands
  • Watches
  • Fine art and sculpture
  • Furs
  • Silverware and china
  • Coins, stamps and collectibles
  • Musical instruments
  • Cameras and equipment

What to provide

  • A recent appraisal or receipt for each item
  • Photos of each piece
  • Where items are kept and any safe or alarm
  • For collections, an inventory with values

Large collections may be better insured with a standalone collections policy offering blanket coverage, automatic coverage for new purchases and breakage protection.
