What Group Health coverage includes

Group health insurance lets employers offer medical, dental and vision coverage to employees and their families. It is one of the most valued benefits for attracting and keeping good employees, and premiums the employer pays are generally tax-deductible. Under the ACA, small-group plans cannot deny coverage for pre-existing conditions. We compare carriers and plan designs to match your budget and workforce.

Good to know: most carriers require at least 70% of eligible employees to enroll, not counting valid waivers, and an employer contribution of at least 50% of employee-only premium.

Not covered: non-employees, such as most independent contractors, and benefits outside the plan design you choose.

Group health explained

How group health insurance works

The employer chooses one or more plans, sets how much to contribute, and employees enroll during open enrollment or when they are first eligible.

Medical plans

PPO, HMO, EPO and HSA-eligible plans.

Dental and vision

Add-on coverage employees value highly.

Life and disability

Group term life and short- or long-term disability.

Employee choice

Offer several plans so employees can pick what fits.

Small group size: in most states, small-group plans are for employers with 1 to 50 employees, and in California, Colorado, New York and Vermont, 1 to 100. Larger employers have more plan options and different rules, including ACA employer mandate requirements at 50 or more full-time equivalents.
