What Workers Compensation coverage includes

Workers compensation pays medical bills and lost wages for employees injured on the job, and protects your business from most related lawsuits. Nearly every state requires it once you have employees, and penalties for going without can include fines and stop-work orders. We compare carriers, pay-as-you-go options and state funds to get the right class codes and price.

Good to know: putting each employee in the correct class code matters more than anything else. A misclassified clerical worker can cost you thousands at audit.

Not covered: injuries from horseplay, intoxication or self-inflicted harm, and independent contractors who are not properly classified. Rules vary by state.

Workers comp explained

How workers compensation works

A workers comp policy has two parts: statutory benefits for injured employees, and employers liability for lawsuits related to workplace injuries.

Medical care

Doctor visits, hospital care, surgery, therapy and prescriptions for work injuries.

Lost wages

Partial wage replacement while an employee recovers.

Disability benefits

Temporary and permanent disability benefits as set by state law.

Employers liability

Lawsuits tied to employee injuries, such as claims from a spouse or third party.

Monopolistic states: in North Dakota, Ohio, Washington and Wyoming, workers comp is purchased from the state fund, not private carriers. You may still need stop-gap employers liability from a private carrier. Tell us where your employees work.

Pricing

How your workers comp premium is calculated

The formula

  • Payroll for each class code, per $100
  • Class code rate, based on the risk of the work
  • Experience modification (mod), comparing your claims to similar businesses
  • Discounts and credits from the carrier
  • Your final premium is adjusted by an audit of actual payroll

Ways to lower your cost

  • Classify each employee in the correct code
  • Separate clerical and sales payroll from field payroll
  • Create a written safety program and return-to-work plan
  • Report injuries quickly to control claim costs
  • Collect certificates from subcontractors so they are not added to your payroll

Declined by carriers? If no carrier will offer coverage, your state's assigned risk pool provides a safety net while you build a better loss history.
