What Medicare Advantage / Part D coverage includes

Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans combine hospital and medical coverage, and usually prescription drugs, in one plan from a private insurer approved by Medicare. Part D plans add prescription coverage to Original Medicare. We compare plans available in your area against your doctors, pharmacies and prescriptions, at no cost to you.

Good to know: Annual Enrollment runs October 15 – December 7. We do not offer every plan available in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE, or your local State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) to get information on all of your options.

Not covered: care outside the plan network on HMO plans, except emergencies and urgent care.

Medicare explained

How Medicare coverage works

Medicare has four parts. Most people choose between Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement and a Part D drug plan, or an all-in-one Medicare Advantage plan.

Part A

Hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice and some home health care.

Part B

Doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services and medical equipment.

Part C (Medicare Advantage)

Private plans that include Parts A and B, usually drug coverage, and often dental, vision and hearing benefits.

Part D

Prescription drug coverage added to Original Medicare or included in many Advantage plans.

Advantage or Supplement? Medicare Advantage plans often have low or no extra premium but use provider networks, copays and an annual out-of-pocket maximum. A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan costs more each month but lets you see any doctor who accepts Medicare with predictable costs. The right choice depends on your doctors, health, budget and travel.

Enrollment

Key Medicare enrollment periods

When you can enroll

  • Initial Enrollment Period: the 7 months around your 65th birthday month
  • Annual Enrollment Period: October 15 to December 7, for coverage starting January 1
  • Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment: January 1 to March 31, to switch Advantage plans or return to Original Medicare
  • Special Enrollment Periods: after events like moving or losing employer coverage

What to have ready

  • Your Medicare card and Part A and B start dates
  • A list of your prescriptions and dosages
  • Your doctors, specialists and preferred pharmacies
  • Any current plan's Annual Notice of Change

Avoid late penalties. If you go without creditable drug coverage after you become eligible, a Part D late enrollment penalty may be added to your premium for as long as you have Part D. Delaying Part B without employer coverage can also bring a lifelong penalty.
