What Annuity Suitability coverage includes

An annuity is a contract with an insurance company that turns savings into guaranteed income or grows money on a tax-deferred basis. Annuities are designed for long-term retirement goals, such as income you cannot outlive or protecting principal from market losses. We compare fixed, indexed and income annuities across carriers and review suitability with you before any recommendation.

Good to know: surrender charges apply in the early years, so make sure the money will not be needed for that period. Annuities are not FDIC insured, and guarantees are backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company.

Not covered: annuities are not a substitute for an emergency fund, and withdrawals before age 59 1/2 may be subject to a 10% federal tax penalty in addition to ordinary income tax.

Annuities explained

How annuities work

You pay the insurance company a lump sum or a series of payments. In return, your money grows tax-deferred and can be turned into a stream of guaranteed income, either now or later.

Fixed annuity

A guaranteed interest rate for a set period, similar to a CD but tax-deferred.

Fixed indexed annuity

Interest linked to a market index with a floor that protects you from losses, subject to caps or participation rates.

Immediate income annuity

Converts a lump sum into guaranteed income that starts within a year, for life or a set period.

Deferred income annuity

Buy now and start guaranteed income at a future date, often at a higher payout.

Our suitability review: before we recommend an annuity, we review your age, income, other assets, liquidity needs, tax situation and goals, as state law requires. An annuity should fit your overall plan, not replace it.

Before you buy

Questions to ask about any annuity

Know the terms

  • How long is the surrender period, and what are the charges each year?
  • How much can I withdraw each year without a charge?
  • What are the caps, participation rates or spreads, and can they change?
  • Are there fees for optional income or death benefit riders?
  • What is the issuing company's financial strength rating?

Good fits for an annuity

  • You want income you cannot outlive in retirement
  • You have maxed out other tax-advantaged savings
  • You want to protect part of your savings from market losses
  • You do not need the money for the length of the surrender period
  • You want a guaranteed death benefit for heirs

Review before you replace. Exchanging an existing annuity or life policy for a new one can restart surrender charges and change benefits. We will compare both side by side before you decide.
