What Term Life coverage includes

Term life insurance pays a tax-free lump sum to your family if you die during the term you choose, usually 10, 20 or 30 years. It is the most affordable way to buy a large amount of protection for the years your family depends on your income, such as while raising children or paying off a mortgage. We compare carriers on price and on how they underwrite your health history.

Good to know: a common rule of thumb is 10 to 12 times your annual income, plus your mortgage and other debts, education costs and final expenses. Rates are based on your age and health on the day you apply, so buying earlier usually costs less.

Not covered: death by suicide in the first two years, and claims tied to misstatements on the application.

Life insurance explained

How life insurance works

Life insurance replaces the financial support you provide if you die. The right type depends on how long you need coverage and whether you also want to build cash value.

Term life

Pure protection for a set number of years at the lowest cost. If you outlive the term, coverage ends or can be renewed or converted.

Whole life

Lifetime coverage with fixed premiums and guaranteed cash value that grows over time.

Universal life

Lifetime coverage with flexible premiums and a cash value tied to interest rates or an index.

Final expense

Smaller whole life policies, often with simplified underwriting, to cover funeral and end-of-life costs.

Term or permanent? Many families buy term to cover the years of greatest need and use the savings to invest. Permanent coverage makes sense for estate planning, a lifelong dependent, business succession or leaving a guaranteed legacy. We can show both side by side.

What affects your life insurance rate

Rating factors

  • Age and gender
  • Height, weight and medical history
  • Tobacco and nicotine use
  • Prescription history and family health history
  • Driving record and hazardous hobbies such as flying or diving
  • Coverage amount and term length

What to expect

  • A short application and phone interview
  • A paramedical exam with blood and urine samples, unless you qualify for no-exam
  • Review of prescription and medical records
  • A decision in days to a few weeks
  • Your rate class is offered before you pay anything

Name your beneficiaries carefully. Life insurance proceeds generally go directly to your named beneficiaries outside of probate. Name a contingent beneficiary, and consider a trust if minor children would inherit.
